Unistrut Channel & Support Systems: Frame Brackets, Spring Nuts, and Pipe Clamps

Unistrut metal framing channel systems form the structural backbone of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) support networks in modern commercial buildings. From cable tray suspensions and HVAC duct supports to pipework grids and solar framing, channel systems allow fast, modular framing without on-site welding.

The Components of a Channel Support System

1. Metal Framing Channel (Strut)

Rolled steel section with inward-curved lips that grip channel nut teeth.

  • Standard Profiles: Plain (Solid) or Slotted (pre-punched slots for rapid bolting).

  • Sizes: $41\text{mm} \times 41\text{mm}$ (Standard) and $41\text{mm} \times 21\text{mm}$ (Shallow Channel).

  • Finishes: Hot-Dip Galvanized (HDG), Plain Steel, Electro-Galvanized, and 316 Stainless Steel.

2. Channel Spring Nuts (Zinced & Stainless)

Channel nuts feature grooved teeth that bite into the inward lips of the strut when tightened. Attached springs hold the nut in position inside the channel during assembly.

  • Thread Sizes: M6, M8, M10, and M12.

  • Styles: Long Spring (for $41\times41$ channel), Short Spring (for $41\times21$ channel), and No-Spring options.

3. Structural Fittings & Brackets

Heavy 5mm or 6mm steel joiners, flat plates, L-brackets, T-plates, and 45-degree knee braces enable rigid 3D frame construction using standard hex bolts.

Loading & Spacing Engineering Factors

When designing channel support grids for heavy electrical or plumbing loads:

  • Beam Load Capacity: Ensure total equipment weight does not exceed maximum allowable center-point loads for the selected channel span.

  • Corrosion Matching: Match channel finish to environment—use Hot-Dip Galvanized or 316 Stainless channel and fittings for outdoor roof plant decks or coastal car parks to avoid premature rusting.
