Anti-Corrosion Coatings for Construction Fasteners

Protective Coatings for Construction Fasteners: Hot-Dip Galvanized, Zinc Plated & Mechanical Plating

Fastener corrosion compromises structural integrity, creates maintenance burdens, and reduces the operational life of civil and commercial structures. When specifying steel bolts for outdoor framing, structural steelwork, retaining walls, or solar infrastructure, choosing the right surface protection is as important as selecting the steel grade.

At Gold Coast Bolt Pro, we stock an extensive range of corrosion-resistant coatings. This guide evaluates Zinc Plating, Hot-Dip Galvanizing (HDG), and Mechanical Plating across performance, thickness, and environmental application.

1. Bright Zinc Plating (BZP)

Electro-zinc plating involves electrochemically depositing a thin layer of zinc onto steel fasteners, followed by a clear or yellow passivate coating.

  • Coating Thickness: Very thin ($5\mu m$ to $12\mu m$).

  • Appearance: Shiny, smooth metallic silver or yellow finish.

  • Corrosion Resistance: Low. Intended primarily for indoor, dry environments.

  • Best Uses: Furniture assembly, indoor electrical enclosures, dry interior framing, and automotive internal components.

2. Hot-Dip Galvanizing (HDG)

Hot-Dip Galvanizing involves immersing cleaned steel bolts into a bath of molten zinc at approximately $450^\circ\text{C}$. The zinc reacts with steel to form series of zinc-iron alloy layers topped by pure zinc.

  • Coating Thickness: Heavy-duty ($45\mu m$ to $85\mu m+$).

  • Appearance: Dull grey, slightly rough textured finish.

  • Corrosion Resistance: Exceptional outdoor performance. Provides barrier protection plus galvanic (sacrificial) protection.

  • Best Uses: Outdoor structural steel framing, highway guardrails, retaining walls, treated timber framing, and exposed civil builds.

  • Note: Due to heavy coating thickness, HDG bolts require oversized tapped HDG nuts to prevent thread binding.

3. Mechanical Galvanizing / Plating

Mechanical plating tumble-coats cold steel fasteners with zinc powder, glass beads, and chemical accelerators without heat immersion.

  • Coating Thickness: Customizable ($25\mu m$ to $50\mu m$).

  • Corrosion Resistance: High outdoor durability, comparable to HDG.

  • Key Advantage: Eliminates Hydrogen Embrittlement risk in high-tensile steel fasteners (Grade 10.9 and above), making it ideal for high-stress spring clips and structural fixings.
